Lads did ye hear the best thing since *SLICED PAN* ???
There was a bread crisis and it all began on March 28th with a fall of snow, I kid you not !
People were bulk buying sliced bread like there was going to be a famine, I know, I know, nuts right.
I know I may be one of a rare breed out there who actually knows how to bake a bitta bread … I think they teach you that in school if memory serves me correctly.
Or you were one of those people who’s Granny did a weekly bake, Soda bread/ plain/ fruit, batch of scones, queen cakes, an apple pie & a jam sponge. Hell she even went wild every now & again and made a tea brack or a rhubarb crumble. Ah they were the days.
Seriously, like I never laughed as much as I have over the so called #breadcrisis2018, YES it was a hashtag i kid you not. Tesco, SV, Aldi, all the supermarket shelves laid bare like a lady after a Brazilian 😆😜😯😣
I myself had not done any extra food shopping for bread, just 3 extra milks cause my lot are like a mini herd of suckie cows ( family of 4 kids). Snowmagedden only held us hostage for 2 days. What I mean is we didn’t run out of bread, I baked it with my little girl as we love to bake & stock the freezer and with all the kerfuffle about the said bread crisis I got an urge for some homemade, *YES* homemade, that is when you bake something from scratch with your own hands & watch it rise in the oven whilst the aroma of homebaking brings you back to bygone days in Granmas kitchen.
Sounds good right & believe me it tastes even better hot from the oven with lashings of Kerrygold melting lovingly and caressing gently into the warm bread.
* 450g Self-raising flour
* 1 level teaspoon of bread soda
* 1 level teaspoon of cream of tartar
* 1 tablespoon of caster sugar ( optional)
* Good pinch of salt
* 50g of butter (grate it into bowl)
* 300 ml of buttermilk or sour milk (I eyeballed the milk till it formed a nice soft dough like mixture)
But you can measure if you like👍
(I had neither so used regular milk)
Place in a preheated oven 200°c for 40 mins on a lightly floured tray.
I cover with tinfoil for the last 15 mins.
P.S *Don’t forget the eggwash*
